Pilsner Beer Chicken Meatloaf

Pilsner Beer Chicken Meatloaf

First off, before you leave, know that I hate meatloaf too. It has never been a choice food for me, being that I am not the biggest fan of ground beef, plus it’s meat… in a loaf… Eck… but I stumbled upon a recipe of regular meatloaf with beer added to it to add more flavour and moisture. I decided to give it a go, using ground chicken instead of beef, making this Pilsner Beer Chicken Meatloaf. I selected a pilsner beer from Brauerei Fahr (I am going to just call them Fahr through out the remainder of this post), a brewery in Turner Valley, Alberta

Well, I still wouldn’t say I am a meatloaf lover per se, but this Pilsner Beer Chicken Meatloaf was pretty amazing! It was moist on the inside, crispy on the outside, and packed full of flavour! And the Fahr Out Pilsner paired perfectly with it, and in it!

Okay, I am going to beer nerd out on you a little here. I was really excited to try out some of the beers from Fahr as they follow the German Purity Law (a.k.a. the Reinheitsgebot). Since Eric and I are currently taking our Cicerone Level 1, Certified Beer Server Course, we are learning a lot about beers and where they originate from; specifically, interesting right now are the German beers. This is where I first learned of the German Purity Law, where in 1516, Germany created this law starting that beer could only contain three ingredients: barley, hops, and water. In 1993 the law added yeast as an allowable ingredient. Fahr follows this law making their beers with only barley, hops, water, and yeast; this makes the beers produced by Fahr to be authentic German style beers!

The Brewery

I already told you a little about Fahr and it’s German Purity Law standards. It’s a no brainer to find out that the founder, Jochen Fahr, was born in Germany! Jochen’s father worked in a nearby brewery and this is where he found his passion for brewing early on. You will be able to find authentic German style beers such as the Hefeweizen, Dunkelweizen, and Pilsner. Find out more at their website, facebook, twitter, or instagram. If you live in Alberta, you can find their beers at your favourite craft beer store, but they also just opened their taproom on site – Grand Opening January 19th!

The Beer

The Fahr Out Pilsner pours a clear straw-golden-yellow colour with a nice thick line of frothy white head that dissipates into a thin bubbly line. The smell is bready with some light floral/herbal hops. The taste is of cereal/bready malts, a slight sweetness, very subtle earthy hops. The mouthfeel is crisp with a high carbonation and a slightly dry finish. Overall, this is a smooth, refreshing, and pleasant German Pilsner.

The Recipe

I found this Fahr Out German Pilsner to not only be an excellent choice going into the Pilsner Beer Chicken Meatloaf recipe, but also it paired amazingly with the Pilsner Beer Chicken Meatloaf!

Slice and serve with Greek yogurt. I spiced up my Greek yogurt with some sumac, Za’Atar, salt and pepper. Goes great with a side salad an couscous.
