The Beer

For this recipe, I used Grizzly Paw’s Jack O’Lantern Pumpkin Ale. It pours a beautiful maple brown and greets you with a sweet and spicy aroma. Think earthy pumpkin with a dash of fall spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Its smooth and slightly grainy texture pairs perfectly with the apples in this bread, adding depth to every bite. The pumpkin ale complements the bread’s warm, spiced flavours, making it an ideal treat for cool fall days.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups grated apples
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, plus 2 Tbsp to toss apples in
  • 2 tsp cinnamon, divided
  • 2-1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 7 oz pumpkin ale
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper.

  2. Peel and grate the apples, then toss them with 2 Tbsp brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, beat the eggs, then add in the remaining brown sugar and cinnamon, whisking well. Pour in the pumpkin ale and whisk again.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix in the egg and beer mixture until smooth. Add the olive oil and mix again.

Fold in the apple mixture and transfer the batter to your prepared loaf pan.

  4. Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Let the bread cool for 5-10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice, serve, and enjoy with your favourite local fall brew!
