Grilled Ham and Cheese Bites
A lot of the time my inspiration to create a recipe comes from looking at leftovers in the fridge; much like these grilled ham and cheese bites. I had half a tub of cream cheese, half a package of prosciutto ham and half a baguette to use up. Yes, these grilled ham and cheese bites are a bit different than your standard grilled cheese sandwich! They are a little more on the creamy side from the cream cheese and salty from the prosciutto; and they are a great appetizer idea – maybe for a party you might be planning!
Prosciutto is kind of like an Italian bacon. It is a cured ham that is salty and tastes amazing wrapped on things like pork loin, turkey breast, cantaloupe or asparagus; or slice it up and add it to roasting Brussels sprouts. That’s actually why I have left over prosciutto – I used it to add salt, fat and flavour to roasted Brussels sprouts. You could alternatively use up some of that leftover Christmas or New Year’s ham you might have in your fridge!
Cream cheese is a mild, creamy cheese and usually I like a really sharp cheddar for my grilled cheese; but I didn’t want to take away from the prosciutto here, so the cream cheese worked really well for that!
Grilled Ham and Cheese Bites
Start by gathering your four ingredients. Yes, that’s correct. These little bites only require four ingredients! A baguette, prosciutto, cream cheese and butter.
Slice the baguette into 1/2 – 3/4 inch thick slices and butter one side of each slice.
Spread cream cheese on the non-buttered side of all the slices.
Fold one slice of prosciutto on top of half of the cream cheese topped baguette slices and top with the other half of bread slices.
Place on a hot frying pan and grill until a crispy brown on both sides, about 5 – 7 mins for each side.
Serve at your next game day (Superbowl maybe!) party or make for an afternoon snack for yourself!
