Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat Ale Loaf
If you have been reading Chews and Brews from the beginning, you are well aware that I like rhubarb and like using it in baking and cooking. This Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat Ale Loaf is a recipe I have used before in baking, but adding beer adds some different flavours plus yeast which is great for baking loaves and bread! I have used beer before in a loaf, in my Banana Beer Bread. Making fruit loaves like this Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat Ale Loaf or the Banana Beer Bread is a way to use up some of the ripe fruit that you put into your freezer, and you get a tasty snack out of it!
The Brewery
Omen Brewing is located in Edmonton, Alberta, and it is a brewery that I have visited! They are a family owned and operated brewery, and their love of home brewing and DIY attitude focuses them on providing full-flavoured hand crafted beer for the hard working beer loving Albertan. Find out more about Omen Brewing on their Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
The Beer
The beer I chose for the Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat Ale loaf is the Summer Wheat Ale. Note that I used the beer in the recipe and then drank the rest of the beer afterwards while waiting for the loaf to bake (oops!); therefore, the photos of the finished loaf are actually of another wheat ale, lighter in colour, but paired very well with the loaf!
Omen Brewing’s Summer Wheat Ale pours a hazy caramel colour with a light line of white, lingering, bubbly head. The smell is of caramel malts, biscuits, and breads. The taste is of more caramel malt flavours, some toffee, banana, vanilla, and clove. The mouthfeel is a light carbonation, light bodied, a bit thin. Overall the huge bready caramel flavours with the banana, vanilla, and clove make it a awesome wheat ale and perfect for baking!
